Gone for a While, Back with a Story: The Truth About Greener Pastures

After a refreshing break, I'm thrilled to dive back into blogging! Life on the farm has been a whirlwind, filled with joy, challenges, and plenty of stories to share. I wanted to start with a particularly funny incident that happened in late February, I believe it will bring a smile to your face. So grab a cup of coffee (or tea, if that's more your style), and let’s get started!

A Day to Remember: The Great Chicken Escapade

Have you ever received a call and the news you received was just too wild to believe? Well, on February 25th at abour 3pm, I got a call from Jordan who was supposed to be picking up hay at our pastor's house. His first words were, "Uh... we have a problem!" followed by, "3 chickens hitched a ride on the trailer and are now running around Mike's farm." To which I replied, "Wait, what? How? How did they make it on an open trailer ride for over 30 minutes?"

After trying for about 20 minutes to wrangle the chickens back into the truck, he called me for backup. I grabbed some chicken treats and set out for what would be an exhausting adventure.

Trying to catch our hens

When I arrived, Jordan had managed to capture one of the hens and place her in the truck. 1 down, 2 to go! We tried everything to get these chickens to get in the truck, but they could tell that we were up to something and every time we got close... they ran the other way. We tried corralling them into the garage, we tried trapping them in a large box, and of course we tried to catch them mid-run. Nothing was working. So we switched strategies and tried to corner them between the house and the fenceline. That worked for one. 2 down, 1 to go. This girl was not about to get caught. She had us running around the whole farm! She would run under the trailer, then under the tractor, then the truck, and try her best to hide in any little space she could squeeze into. Every time we reached down to grab her, she would find a way to escape. Just when we were about to give up and "gift" this hen to her new home, she decided to jump up on the tractor and Jordan was able to catch her! Finally after almost 2 hours of chasing these chickens around the farm we managed to catch them and get all three hens safely in the truck.

Three chickens, one brown and two gray, standing truck bed

I chuckled as I saw the three hens in the back corner of the truck bed, these girls have had quite the little adventure! It would have been a sight to behold, I imagine them holding on to the trailer for dear life while Jordan was driving upwards of 60mph down a main highway. I doubt they were planning on going on this adventure but sometimes life takes you places you never intended on going. Sometimes for good but other times our choices lead us down roads we never intended to be on. Just like the hens jumping on the trailer to look for food, sometimes we look for our "food" in the wrong places and it can lead us down some dangerous roads. It reminds me of the saying, “the grass is always greener on the other side.” We often yearn for something we think is better without recognizing how good we actually have it. Just like my hens, sometimes we must learn valuable lessons the hard way.

Jordan also learned a valuable lesson that day... always check the trailer before leaving the farm!

Farm Updates: What’s New?

Now that I’ve shared that amusing escapade with my lovely hens, let’s transition to some exciting farm updates!

  1. Home Grown Meat: One of the biggest reasons we wanted to start our farm was to be closer to our food supply. Tiergan (our steer) and 3 of our goats from last year went to freezer camp this month and we now have a very full freezer to feed our family & friends!

  2. Kidding Season: We welcomed six baby goats to our farm family. Two who have completly stolen our hearts after narrowly escaping death! I'll share more about them next week.

  3. Surprise Chicks: As if we needed more chickens on the farm! We had a surprise hatch of 10 chickens. It has been such a joy to watch mama hen take such great care of them!

Moving Forward with a Fresh Perspective

As I return to my blogging rhythm, my aim is to continue to share both joyous experiences and valuable lessons from our farm journey. Whether recounting mishaps like the Great Chicken Escapade or highlighting updates on new products I am developing, I hope to offer you enriching insights into farm life, filled with humor and heartfelt moments.

Thank you for joining me on this journey—I can’t wait to share more with you soon!

How can I pray for you?
